The rights of nature and Indigenous peoples are threatened by mega-dams such as the Belo Monte — which would displace tens of thousands of indigenous and riverine people and divert up to 80 percent of the Xingu River’s flow — and three major dams planned for the Tapajós River that would have similarly devastating impacts. Such projects may also amount to the international crime of ecocide.
